Assessing DFO's Conservation Performance: For the David Suzuki Foundation, David L. Peterson, DKE, Allen Wood Consulting, and Julia Gardner of Dovetail Consulting conducted an analysis and assessment of the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Pacific Region's performance on its conservation mandate. The study, conducted during 2004 and early 2005, with the assistance of an expert panel, analysed recent pertinent literature and budget documents, carried out case studies dealing with a number of areas of DFO responsibility and identified core challenges the department faces in attempting to perform on its conservation mandate. The report presented a number of possible solutions that could improve the department's conservation performance in the Pacific Region.  Web reference: www.davidsuzuki.org

Aquaculture and Hatchery Assessment Reports:  For the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC), in 2002 and 2003, DKE, working with Dovetail Consulting, prepared a report entitled "Making Sense of the Aquaculture Debate," which assessed and evaluated the impacts of BC salmon aquaculture on the province's wild salmon resource. In March 2004, DKE completed, with Dovetail, Allen Wood Consulting and Vicki Maloney, a similar report, "Making Sense of the Hatchery Debate." It assessed the impacts of hatcheries and other enhancement activities on BC's wild salmon.  Both reports are available at www.fish.bc.ca.

BC Seafood Industry Summits:  For the BC Seafood Alliance (BCSA), an umbrella trade association representing 14 specialty seafood organizations, DKE planned and organized the first annual BC Seafood Summit in 2001, for 100 high-profile invitees. In 2002, the firm provided similar services for Seafood Summit II, which included workshops and presentations focusing on the issue of fisheries co-management. Most recently, DKE  assisted with the planning and organization of Seafood Summit III, which was held in January 2004. It dealt with the new Species at Risk Act (SARA), as well with the many other challenges facing BC's seafood industries. For more information, visit: www.bcseafoodalliance.com.

Offshore Oil and Gas Seismic Impacts Workshop:  Also for BCSA, DKE organized a one day workshop in February 2004. Its purpose was to inform BCSA members and other invited attendees about the potential impacts of offshore oil and gas-related seismic testing on fish, fisheries, fishers and aquaculture.  DKE's Dave Peterson arranged for the participation of scientific and fishing industry speakers from eastern Canada, who reported on their experience and provided insights designed to help BC seafood industry members shape their responses to the possible lifting of the moratoria on BC offshore development. Mr. Peterson also prepared a background paper that was distributed to attendees before the workshop.

Southeast Asia Fisheries Conference:  Under contract to the Canadian International Development Agency, DKE provided assistance to the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in organizing a major international fisheries conference, held in Bangkok in November 2001.  In the closing session, Fisheries Ministers from ten Southeast Asian nations and Japan endorsed a joint resolution for developing more sustainable fisheries in the region.

Ocean Industry Strategies:  For the Institute for Pacific Ocean Science and Technology (IPOST), a Vancouver-based non-profit organization dealing with development of ocean industries, DKE prepared a feasibility study for a major conference on innovation and coastal community development, including a preliminary program and budget and an analysis of the market and sponsorship opportunities for the conference (2001).

Corporate Events:  For Batchelor Bay Management Ltd., DKE planned and managed a VIP open house and tour for its Englewood Packing Company plant in Port McNeill, north Vancouver Island (2001) and provided strategic advice in the planning of a 10th anniversary gala for employees of its Brown's Bay Packing Company plant, Campbell River (1999).
