SFU Community Trust/UniverCity Celebration Weekend:  DKE is assisting the management and staff of the Simon Fraser University Community Trust in staging a three-day celebration of the launch of its new planned community, UniverCity, on the University's Burnaby campus. The three-day celebration will include a recognition dinner, a variety of indoor and outdoor entertainment and dining activities, and exhibits designed to showcase merchants in UniverCity's Cornerstone retail centre and to provide information to new residents about sustainability initiatives. ParkLane Homes: East Fraserlands Design Charrette: DKE assisted ParkLane Homes with planning and coordination of an eight-day design charrette for the firm's 100-acre East Fraserlands property, one of the largest remaining undeveloped residential parcels in Vancouver. Other participants in the charrette included the City of Vancouver, the Miami-based new urbanist planning firm Duany Plater-Zyberk (DPZ) and The Hulbert Group. DKE was responsible for the logistics associated with conducting eight public meetings in a large tent and an associated office building on the property. DKE also advised the client on strategies for attracting and involving the public. Web reference: www.eastfraserlands.com

BC Land Summit: From 2002 to 2004, DKE served as the conference coordinator for the first-ever BC Land Summit, which was held in Vancouver in May 2004.  This 600-attendee event brought together the annual conferences of five of the province's land-related professional associations, representing urban and rural planners, the real estate industry, landscape architects, real estate appraisers and agrologists.   DKE was responsible for liaising with and coordinating the work of volunteer committees from the five partnering professional associations.   The Land Summit utilized multiple venues on the University of British Columbia campus.  For this client, DKE introduced an on-line proposal submission process to capture ideas for conference presentations, workshops and field trips. As a final task, DKE prepared an operations manual to capture lessons learned from the Summit and to facilitate planning for future Summits.  Web reference: www.bclandsummit.com

Watershed Stewardship Workshop: For the City of Coquitlam, a rapidly-urbanizing city of 100,000, DKE was involved, in June 2003, in the organization of and execution of a multi-stakeholder workshop which addressed issues of watershed stewardship and local government responsibility. Working with Dovetail Consulting, DKE coordinated stakeholder identification, the invitation and pre-registration process and venue and logistics arrangements for a one-day public consultation hosted by the City. The purpose of the meeting was to develop more effective ways of communicating about development impacts on streams and waterways.  Attendees included watershed stewardship groups, developers and city officials.

Agroecology Forum:  For the Dean of the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, DKE organized a one-day multi-stakeholder conference, held at Harrison Hot Springs Resort in April 2003. The meeting dealt with issues related to the implementation of environmentally sustainable agriculture practices.  Attendees covered a broad spectrum of interests.  They represented academia, industry, NGOs, community organizations and federal, provincial, regional and local governments.

Porch Lights Community Project:  For the City of North Vancouver, DKE  developed a community pilot project with Gabriel Design.  The purpose of the project was to show how using energy-efficient, outdoor residential lighting could make dark city streets more safe and friendly.  DKE developed an information workshop, recruited and coordinated "block" champions and organized a community event to celebrate the success of the pilot project.

Governance for Sustainability Conference:  For the provincial Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management, with Victoria-based Judith Cullington & Associates, DKE organized a by-invitation two day workshop at the Whistler Conference Centre in the summer of 2002.   The purpose of the meeting was to explore the  ways in which governments are incorporating sustainability into their day-to-day practices.  Conference themes were: decision support tools, accountability and institutional responses.

Georgia Basin Ecosystem Initiative:   DKE coordinated the 2002 annual public meeting for this multi-agency federal/provincial initiative.  This one-day event was designed to report and discuss progress in preserving and protecting the Georgia Basin ecosystem and managing growth in communities which are home to over 3 million British Columbians.

Leadership and Innovation in Urban Sustainability: DKE's management of this bi-national, 3-day, 300-attendee Vancouver conference included marketing and internet promotion to Canadian and US Pacific Northwest delegates, registration, coordination of exhibitor displays, and liaising with a 20-member steering committee.  The conference was co-organized by Judith Cullington & Associates and sponsored by the BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Environment Canada, and 14 other BC and Washington State organizations.  DKE arranged for Shaw TV and the Greater Vancouver Regional District to create a one-hour TV program, hosted by Kevin Evans, covering a portion of the conference (2001).
