Fisheries and Oceans

Canada's Oceans' Future: In the spring of 2008, DKE assisted the David Suzuki Foundation and four other ENGOs concerned about the health of Canada's coastal and ocean environments, communities and economies with the planning and conduct of a two day national level symposium in Ottawa. The subject of the symposium was: "Canada's Oceans Future: A Dialogue to Assess Options for Establishing a National Forum on Ocean Policy and Management."  Attendees included over fifty leadership-level representatives from federal and provincial government, First Nations, aboriginal, industry, academia, and NGOs.  Web reference: www.davidsuzuki.org

Moving Forward with PNCIMA: In the fall of 2007, DKE coordinated a two day workshop for the Living Oceans Society and the BC Marine ENGO Caucus designed to bring key stakeholders together to discuss how to move forward with the development of the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA) plan. Wild Salmon Community Meetings:  From 2006 to 2008,  DKE has assisted the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC) with the promotion and execution of a series of community meetings around British Columbia, dealing with wild salmon issues.  These meetings, attracting between 30 and 70 persons, have been held in Port Hardy, Campbell River, Port Alberni, Duncan, Kamloops, Penticton, Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert, Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Fort Langley and Sechelt.  Upcoming meetings in this series will take place in New Aiyansh and on the Queen Charlotte Islands.  Web reference: www.fish.bc.ca

Georgia Basin Ecosystem Management Workshop : DKE also coordinated a workshop for PFRCC on the application of ecosystem management techniques for the Georgia Basin.  The workshop, held in the spring of 2007, brought together scientists, government fisheries managers, First Nations and ENGO representatives.

Ecosystem Management Workshop:  Working with Dovetail Consulting and Peter Abrams Consulting Services, DKE coordinated a workshop for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Pacific Region).  Held in the spring of 2006, the workshop attracted key stakeholders to discuss how to incorporate ecosystem management principles and practices into DFO's Wild Salmon Policy.

Assessing DFO's Conservation Performance: For the David Suzuki Foundation, Dave Peterson of DKE, Allen Wood Consulting, and Julia Gardner of Dovetail Consulting conducted an analysis and assessment of the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Pacific Region's performance on its conservation mandate. The study, conducted during 2004 and early 2005, with the assistance of an expert panel, analyzed recent pertinent literature and budget documents, carried out case studies dealing with a number of areas of DFO responsibility and identified core challenges the department faces in attempting to carry out its conservation mandate. The report presented a number of possible solutions that could improve the department's conservation performance in the Pacific Region.  Web reference: www.davidsuzuki.org

Aquaculture and Hatchery Assessment Reports For the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC), in 2002 and 2003, DKE, working with Dovetail Consulting, prepared a report entitled "Making Sense of the Aquaculture Debate," which assessed and evaluated the impacts of BC salmon aquaculture on the province's wild salmon resource. In March 2004, DKE completed, with Dovetail, Allen Wood Consulting and Vicki Maloney, a similar report, "Making Sense of the Hatchery Debate." It assessed the impacts of hatcheries and other enhancement activities on BC's wild salmon.  Both reports are available at www.fish.bc.ca.

BC Seafood Industry Summits For the BC Seafood Alliance (BCSA), an umbrella trade association representing 14 specialty seafood organizations, DKE has planned and organized four BC Seafood Summits between 2001 and 2006. Each Summit attracted over 100 high-profile invitees and addressed the many challenges facing BC's seafood industries. Web reference: www.bcseafoodalliance.com.

Offshore Oil and Gas Seismic Impacts Workshop Also for BCSA, DKE organized a one day workshop in 2004. Its purpose was to inform BCSA members and other invited attendees about the potential impacts of offshore oil and gas-related seismic testing on fish, fisheries, fishers and aquaculture.  DKE arranged for the participation of scientific and fishing industry speakers from eastern Canada, who reported on their experience and provided insights designed to help BC seafood industry members shape their responses to the possible lifting of the moratoria on BC offshore development. Dave Peterson of DKE also prepared a background paper that was distributed to attendees before the workshop. 

Southeast Asia Fisheries Conference For the Canadian International Development Agency, DKE provided assistance to the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in organizing a major international fisheries conference in Bangkok, Thailand in 2001.  In the closing session, Fisheries Ministers from ten Southeast Asian nations and Japan endorsed a joint resolution for developing more sustainable fisheries in the region.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Governance

Collaborative Learning & Innovation (CLI) Group: Since 2002, DKE has been the in-house conference and workshop manager for this progressive business initiative at Simon Fraser University.  DKE handles registration for the Stakeholder Engagement and Dialogue workshops, held in Vancouver and Toronto. Corporate Accountability Workshops The Accountability Project (TAP) encourages and works to improve sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting in Canada.  TAP is an initiative of Solstice Sustainability Works, in association with InterPraxis Consulting and AccountAbility.  DKE has handled registration and coordination of TAP's workshops from 2003 to the present. Vancity Community Leader Consultation: DKE handled the invitation strategy and venue arrangements for the 2004 and 2006 Vancity social audit review meetings, each of which included over twenty community leaders. The assignment in each case included identification of appropriate attendees from 12 attendee categories, follow-up with invitations and confirmations, and making arrangements for the meetings.

Real Estate and Community Economic Development

AUREO 2007 Conference:   For the Association of University Real Estate Officials (AUREO) and UBC Properties Trust, the host institution, DKE coordinated the 27th annual conference at the Westin Bayshore.  The conference drew over 200 attendees, primarily from universities in the US, but with significant Canadian representation.  Activities included a dinner at the Vancouver Aquarium, a dine-around, and two field trips to the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.  DKE assisted with speaker recruitment and promotion in addition to handling all arrangements for the conference.  Web reference: www.aureo.org

UBC Properties Trust: DKE has planned and coordinated additional local events for UBC Properties Trust in the past year.  The firm coordinated an evening event for owners (and co-developers) of condominiums in the   Keenleyside community, one of UBCPT's developments on the UBC campus.  DKE also set up a day-long workshop in a vacant UBC building at which architects, designers and Vancouver School Board representatives discussed strategies for converting the building to a secondary school.  Most recently, DKE coordinated the ground-breaking ceremony for the Sauder School of Business' new MBA House Residence.  This is another of UBCPT's developments, in the Wesbrook Mall area of the south campus.

 Prince Rupert Container Port Conference: Change Brings Opportunity: For the Prince Rupert-based Community Futures organization and twenty other participating sponsors, DKE organized a 2-day conference for 350 delegates at the Performing Arts Centre in Prince Rupert.  Held in November 2006, the conference showcased key participants in the port development project.  Delegates came from the private sector, government, and economic development agencies to learn more about the opportunities associated with the port expansion.  The conference included exhibits, two off-site lunches, a gala dinner and a tour of the container port construction site. It received the "conference of the year" award from the BC Economic Developers Association. Web reference:

SFU Community Trust/UniverCity Celebration Weekend In June 2005, DKE assisted SFU Community Trust with staging a celebration of the launch of its new planned community, UniverCity, on the University's Burnaby campus. The celebration included a recognition dinner, a variety of indoor and outdoor entertainment and dining activities, and exhibits designed to showcase merchants in UniverCity's Cornerstone retail centre and to provide information to new residents about sustainability initiatives. ParkLane Homes: East Fraserlands Design Charrette: In April 2005, DKE assisted ParkLane Homes with planning and coordinating an eight-day design charrette for the firm's 100-acre East Fraserlands property, one of the largest remaining undeveloped residential parcels in Vancouver. Other participants in the charrette included the City of Vancouver, the Miami-based new urbanist planning firm Duany Plater-Zyberk (DPZ) and The Hulbert Group. DKE was responsible for the logistics associated with conducting eight public meetings in a large tent and an associated office building on the property. Credit Unions and Community Economic Development For Vancity, DKE assisted with the planning and execution of the Credit Union Forum, held in 2003.  At this national meeting, credit union staff discussed alternative ways of making their resources available to assist with community development.  The meeting was held at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver's Yaletown neighbourhood.

Health, Ethics and Social Justice

Keeping the Door Open (KDO): Dialogues on Drug Use: DKE has worked with this Vancouver NGO on a number of public events from 2000 to the present.    KDO is a community coalition that convenes public dialogues on the range of issues associated with problematic substance use in order to advance the public discussion and inform public policy.  DKE assisted KDO with a dinner for community leaders held in the Downtown Eastside (DTES), which is credited for laying the foundations for the City's Four Pillars approach, a number of public dialogues at the Wosk Centre for Dialogue, an international film festival, and a community meeting to discuss the legal and ethical issues involved in the federal government's proposed closure of the city's supervised injection site. This meeting was held in the renovated Cinema 319 Theatre, at 319 Main Street in the heart of the DTES.  Most recently, in the spring of 2008, DKE assisted KDO with a two day symposium on "Rethinking Treatment: Recognising and Responding to the Spectrum of Substance Use."  Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (CANAC) National Conferences:  DKE coordinated two three day national conferences for CANAC in Vancouver, in 2002 and 2007.  CANAC is the national organization for nurses working in HIV/AIDS care.  HIV/AIDS Art Show Opening and Benefit: For the Dr. Peter Centre, DKE organized an art exhibition at Vancouver's Buschlen Mowatt Gallery, as well as the opening evening reception for the exhibition.  DKE coordinated the call for art works, facilitated the jury/selection process, arranged for insurance and transportation of the art works, and assisted with promotion and marketing.  

Nurses Working in Harm Reduction - Satellite Conference:  In 2006, in conjunction with the 17th International Conference on the Reduction of Drug Related Harm, DKE coordinated a satellite conference for nurses "on the vanguard of harm reduction in health care practice."

Focus Groups:  For Praxis Pacific, DKE handled arrangements and participant liaison for a series of ten focus groups on the ethics of genetic banking for humans and genomics research on salmon.  Researchers from the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics at the University of British Columbia led this project.   DKE also assisted Praxis Pacific in making arrangements for a series of focus groups on how food and dietary practices of various religious, philosophical and cultural traditions may be affected by the genetic modification of food.  The research, conducted by the University of Victoria's Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, surveyed representatives of the Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and ethical/vegan/vegetarian traditions. Land Use, Planning and Environment

Riparian Management in Headwater Catchments:  Translating Science into Management:   For clients in the Geography, Forestry and Fisheries Departments at UBC and Simon Fraser University, plus four other federal and provincial sponsors, DKE organized a 2-day conference for 200 academics and government policy-makers and regulators.  The conference was held in February 2007 at UBC and included a poster session, an off-site dinner and a field trip to the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest outside Maple Ridge.

Water in the City Conference: Working with Judith Cullington & Associates and the Capital Regional District in Victoria, DKE coordinated a 300-attendee conference in September 2006 at the Victoria Conference Centre.  The five day event included two trade shows, a satellite workshop, receptions at BC Experience and the Royal BC Museum, a restaurant dine-around, field trips and activities for companions.  Nearly 100 presenters spoke about innovative approaches for municipalities to address water quantity, quality and conservation issues.

Nanaimo Official Community Plan (OCP) Workshop: For UMA Engineering and Praxis Pacific, DKE organized a one-day public workshop for the City of Nanaimo, as part of the citizen participation component of its OCP update.  The workshop was held at two venues at Malaspina University College.

GVRD Conservation Land Forum: For the Parks Department of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (now Metro Vancouver), DKE, working with Dovetail Consulting and Peter Abrams Consulting Services, developed the invitation strategy and coordinated two workshops in the Lower Mainland.  The workshops were designed to bring together conservation organizations, foundations, land trusts and corporations to discuss the feasibility of creating a land conservation forum to address conservation issues in a more collaborative way.

BC Land Summit: From 2002 to 2004, DKE served as the conference coordinator for the first-ever BC Land Summit, which was held on the main UBC campus in 2004.  This 500-attendee event brought together the annual conferences of five of the province's land-related professional associations, representing urban and rural planners, the real estate industry, landscape architects, real estate appraisers and agrologists.   DKE was responsible for liaising with and coordinating the work of volunteer committees from the five partnering professional associations. DKE prepared an operations manual to capture lessons learned from the Summit and to facilitate planning for future Summits. 

Coquitlam Watershed Stewardship Workshop: For the City of Coquitlam,  DKE was involved, in 2003, in the organization and execution of a multi-stakeholder workshop which addressed issues of watershed stewardship and local government responsibility. Working with Dovetail Consulting, DKE coordinated stakeholder identification, the invitation and pre-registration process and venue and logistics arrangements for a one-day public consultation hosted by the City. The purpose of the meeting was to develop more effective ways of communicating about development impacts on streams and waterways.  Attendees included watershed stewardship groups, developers and city officials.

Agroecology Forum For the Dean of UBC's Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, DKE organized a one-day multi-stakeholder conference at Harrison Hot Springs Resort in 2003. The meeting dealt with issues related to the implementation of environmentally sustainable agriculture practices.  Attendees covered a broad spectrum of interests.  They represented academia, industry, NGOs, community organizations and federal, provincial, regional and local governments.

Governance for Sustainability Conference For the provincial Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management, with Judith Cullington and Associates, DKE organized a by-invitation two day workshop at the Whistler Conference Centre in 2002.   The meeting examined the ways in which governments were incorporating sustainability into their day-to-day practices. 

Georgia Basin Ecosystem Initiative:   DKE coordinated the 2002 annual public meeting for this multi-agency federal/provincial initiative.  This one-day event was designed to report and discuss progress in preserving and protecting the Georgia Basin ecosystem and managing growth in communities which are home to over 3 million British Columbians.

Leadership and Innovation in Urban Sustainability: DKE's management of this bi-national, 3-day, 300-attendee Vancouver conference included marketing and promotion to Canadian and US Pacific Northwest delegates, registration, coordination of exhibitor displays, and liaising with a 20-member steering committee.  The conference was co-organized by Judith Cullington and Associates and sponsored by the BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Environment Canada, and 14 other BC and Washington State organizations.  DKE arranged for Shaw TV and the Greater Vancouver Regional District to create a one-hour TV program, hosted by Kevin Evans, covering a portion of the conference (2001).

Porch Lights Community Project For the City of North Vancouver, DKE  developed a community pilot project with Gabriel Design.  The purpose of the project was to show how using energy-efficient, outdoor residential lighting could make dark city streets more safe and friendly.  DKE developed an information workshop, recruited and coordinated "block" champions and organized a community event to celebrate the success of the pilot project.

Climate Change

Vancouver Climate Change Workshops:  In the summer of 2002, DKE implemented a multi-stakeholder invitation strategy for two climate change workshops of 120 people, sponsored by the provincial Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection.  DKE also handled venue management and registration for the Vancouver events. Local, provincial and federal climate change strategies, plans and policy options were presented and discussed.

Provincial Climate Change Economic Impacts Panel In 2002-2003, DKE provided secretariat services for the provincially-appointed Climate Change Economic Impacts Panel.  This eleven-member multi-sector panel, appointed by the provincial Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection and Ministry of Energy and Mines, developed strategies to guide BC's responses to dealing with greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and presented them in report form and in meetings with the ministers involved and representatives of the Premier's office.

Wilderness, Parks, Recreation and Tourism

Big Wild: Banff Launch Meeting:  For Hollyhock Leadership Institute, DKE helped to organize a project launch meeting in November 2007 at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta, for the national "Big Wild" initiative, which is designed to stimulate public awareness of the need to preserve major areas of wilderness in Canada and the US.  Attendees included CPAWS and MEC, the primary sponsors of the initiative, and a number of partnering organizations. BC Recreation Stewardship Panel: For Praxis Pacific, in 2002, DKE provided support services for soliciting and tracking over 500 comment forms and written submissions.  The comments and submissions were made in response to the release of the Panel's draft recommendations entitled: "A New Management and Funding Model for Fish, Wildlife and Park Recreation."

North Coast Tourism For a client group which included Mike Harcourt, former premier of the Province of British Columbia, and John McInnis, then Executive Director of the Environmental Mining Council, DKE promoted and assisted with the logistics of two workshops designed to bring First Nations and other North Coast businesses and tourism groups together to discuss the potential for developing tourism on the province's North Coast.  Meetings were held in Prince Rupert and Vancouver in 2001.

Tourism Deputy Ministers' Meeting DKE planned and managed an ad hoc meeting of Tourism Deputy Ministers from across Canada, called in response to the downturn in tourism as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.  This high profile 25-attendee meeting, held in Vancouver in October 2001, was hosted by the BC Ministry of Competition, Science and Enterprise and the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture.  With less than two weeks notice, DKE coordinated every detail of this meeting, including providing simultaneous English-French interpretation and proceedings transcription.

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS ):  For the BC chapter of CPAWS, DKE acted as project manager for the 35th anniversary Gala Dinner and Parks Forum conference (1998) and the First Nations Co-Management of Protected Areas conference (2000).  Event planning was a shared responsibility, with DKE providing on-the-job training for CPAWS staff as part of our contract.

Canadian Rivers Conference: For the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC in 1998, DKE acted as advisor and on-site manager for this national event which attracted 200-300 delegates from across Canada.  The theme of the conference was Conserving & Restoring Our River Heritage.

Public Consultation

Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (TransLink): Working with Eclipse Environmental Consulting, DKE provided strategic advice and   logistics assistance for a six-month public involvement process on the Vancouver/UBC Transit Plan.  The goal of the process was to collect comments and ideas for the development of a five year plan to improve bus services in Vancouver and the UBC area.  Over a dozen public workshops and open houses were held in the spring of 2005.  Web reference: www.translink.bc.ca

Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) (now Metro Vancouver):

In 2005 and 2006, DKE and other members of its multi-disciplinary consortium provided public consultation and community relations services to GVRD (now Metro Vancouver) on a variety of projects throughout the Lower Mainland.  DKE has also worked for the Media Relations and Corporate Communications Division of GVRD. BC Drinking Water Protection Plan DKE, working with Praxis Pacific, managed venue logistics and registration for a series of public consultation meetings sponsored by the BC Ministry of Environment, Land and Parks.  Meetings were held at ten locations around the province; between 50-250 people attended each session (2001). 

Fisheries Policy Workshops DKE, working with Dovetail Consulting, planned and managed a series of 16 public consultation meetings, held throughout BC, related to the Wild Salmon Policy proposed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) (2000).

Trans Canada Trail Public Consultations DKE, with Judith Cullington Associates and Dovetail Consulting, conducted a series of public consultation workshops at locations across the province, soliciting public input on issues related to implementation of the BC portion of the Trans Canada Trail (1999).

 Awards Ceremonies

BC Ethics in Action Awards (EIA) DKE served as project manager for this complex event in 2001.  Responsibilities included developing a province-wide campaign to solicit nominations, management of the awards decision-making process, ticket sales and media relations. The 400-attendee Awards Ceremony was held at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.  The seven event sponsors included Vancity and Mountain Equipment Co-op.  DKE also handled ticket sales and distribution for the 2003 and 2004 EIA Awards. The 2004 event, held at the Fairmont Waterfront, attracted 500 attendees and was the first sell-out in the event's eleven year history. Web reference: www.ethicsinaction.com

Vancity "Million Dollar Award" Ceremony In 2001, Vancity launched a new initiative – the award of one million dollars to a worthy project.  Members of this community-oriented credit union voted Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) the winner. DKE assisted VanCity with the exhibit portion of the award ceremony, which was held at the old city hall on Main Street in Vancouver.

Technology and Trade

International Trade and Development For over a decade DKE has worked on a variety of workshops, conferences, trade missions and technical tours for clients such as the Canadian International Development Agency, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. We developed a tour of high tech industries in Vancouver for an incoming mission from China.   In Vancouver, DKE also coordinated two conferences for Working Groups of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). 

International Development Days: In 1993, 1999 and 2002, DKE coordinated all or parts of three successful International Development Days (IDD) conferences in Vancouver and Banff, Alberta.  These 200-attendee events were sponsored by the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). 

Africa Direct:   For the same two sponsors, DKE coordinated the 250 attendee, three day Africa Direct trade and business conference held in Calgary in 2000.  This included marketing the conference in Canada, liaising with speakers and delegates in Canada, the U.S. and nine African nations, and coordinating technical tours of local companies. 

Innovation and Technology in Business and Industry For the Science Council of BC and the Innovation Management Association of Canada, DKE planned and managed a major three-day national conference on business and industrial innovation.  Held in 1999, this event also included a series of site visits to company and lab facilities in the Lower Mainland.   In 1997, DKE coordinated a conference for the Canadian Technology Network.
